Are You Succeeding at Meaningless?
By Bill MacLeod
Bob Goff, our final speaker at Mission ConneXion Northwest, January 15-16, 2016 says: “I used to be afraid of failing at something that really mattered to me, but now I’m more afraid of succeeding at things that don’t matter”.
Bob is the founder of Restore International, a non-profit fighting injustices committed against children in Uganda and India. He shares leadership in a Washington law firm, Goff & DeWalt, and he serves as the Honorary Consul for the Republic of Uganda to the United States. He’s adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School and Point Loma Nazarene University; lives in San Diego, and offices…on Tom’s Sawyer’s Island, Disneyland.
In his book, Love Does, Bob talks about the whimsical direction his life journey has taken where as he dares the reader to “discover a secretly incredible life in an ordinary world.” I personally loved reading about how he took his kids on a world tour to eat ice cream with heads of state and he made friends in Uganda and they liked him so much he became the Ugandan Consul.
Not everyone can live like Bob, but I wonder how many of us are settling for routine instead of believing God for far-reaching. Are we succeeding at meaningless?
Our Without Borders theme this year provokes the Biblical worldview that the gospel was meant to penetrate all people, languages, cultures, and nations as echoed in Hillsong’s “Oceans”…” Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders…” In order to take the good news over oceans, or across the street, I must first ensure that my own life, purpose, and direction is without borders, and lay it all down, at the feet of Jesus, that He might help me “walk upon the waters wherever He would call me” as the song says.
I hope that you will joyfully, and enthusiastically, join me, Bob Goff, Leroy Barber, Steve Hawthorne, Steve Moore and a host of others as we discover together how to live life “Without Borders” in order that Jesus Christ be lifted up and glorified through our lives!
